Associazione Malik

Who we are

Malik’s story is one that ties souls, lands, and cultures seemingly distant but closely intertwined, like in a tight embrace, to the story of a young boy born and raised in a village near Lake Victoria.

The first step of what would be a long road was taken in 2003, on the occasion of the international cooperation project “Games and toys from the South of the World” carried out in Kenya. On that occasion, the figure of Malik – a young teacher in a primary school – turned out to be fundamental: Malik was able to indicate which road to take, open doors, be welcomed by people, and resolve, if necessary, those tiny problems that seemed almost insuperable in a country where nothing could be taken for granted.

Founded in 2004

The experience ends with a beautiful promise: to maintain the bond, create a bridge between Sardinia and Africa and show Malik, eager to see the world, what happens beyond the great continent. But fate, we know, can turn out to be fatal and only a little time passed before discovering that an accident had taken away exactly Malik from his earthly life. However, between the pain and the sorry, there was room for the last words exchanged and, most importantly, the promise to take with us the genuine enthusiasm and love for discovery and life that the same Malik had conveyed. In Africa, when someone passes away, it’s customary to give the name of a lost loved one to a newborn; the same thing happens in our Sardinia as a sort of homage to who, in this life, left a great impression. Useless to say that this cultural affinity was the carrier of a strong message: the future association had to carry the name of Malik.

Our vision

So, Malik Association was born in 2004, and the projects carried out and the people joining the network from then on had a single conductory thread: the soul of a young man that wanted to come to Europe. In the exchanges between countries, in the meet-ups, in the chitchat, Malik is there. And he’s also present in every plane, train, or boat taken, in every house, and in every family that hosted our team but most importantly, the young people who participated in discoveries over the years. Young people, just like Malik.

Our mission

Collaboration, construction of networks, and contamination of languages are the concepts that move the willingness to translate the local identity into a global vision, contributing to local, artistic, social, environmental, territorial, and intercultural development through reflections, initiatives, manifestations, courses, seminars, studies, research, and publications.

We operate in the cultural and social field focused on opportunities for young people in Europe and promoting reading in a broad and cross-disciplinary sense. Through the many actions, we try to promote the knowledge of topics of universal character and foster the diffusion of democracy and solidarity in human relations. Malik’s team unites various competencies in a network of qualified professionals and collaborations that are rooting and branching – in Italy and Europe – to manage each phase of cultural work with a transversal and versatile approach.
